What's legal on Ibiza — and what will cost you
This page exists because the internet gets this wrong. We read the island law, the municipal ordinances and the local press so you don't have to. No legal jargon, no wishful thinking.

Ley 5/2024 — the law that changed Ibiza camping
In 2024 the Consell Insular d'Eivissa passed a law to control vehicle numbers on the island — and buried inside it are the strictest anti-camping rules in Spain. The relevant part (disposición adicional tercera) prohibits camping and overnighting with motor vehicles on rustic land outside the legally established campsites, and classifies breaches as muy graves — fines from €10,001 to €30,000.
Enforcement is real. A motorhome parked at Cala Codolar (Sant Josep) received a €20,000 fine in March 2026; local papers report hundreds of municipal complaints each summer; and the old Park4night-style listings have been systematically removed, with patrols checking the known spots. In May 2026 the island's five municipalities agreed to escalate inspections further.
The summer entry rule (new, and enforced)
Between 1 June and 30 September, caravans and motorhomes travelling to Ibiza must hold a confirmed booking at a licensed campsite. The booking is accredited through the island portal ibizacircular.es, and ferry companies are required to check it before loading your vehicle. The procedure was rolled out through spring 2026 — always verify the current process before booking your ferry. Our practical reading: book your pitches first, register the booking, then book the ferry.
What about the mainland "parking vs camping" rule?
On mainland Spain, a legally parked vehicle may be slept in if nothing extends beyond its footprint (DGT Instrucción 08/V-74 and its 2023–2026 updates). On Ibiza, do not rely on this. The island law and the municipal ordinances explicitly treat sleeping in a vehicle outside a campsite as camping, and the local courts are upholding the fines. Different island, different rulebook.

The questions everyone asks
Is wild camping allowed anywhere in Ibiza?
No. Pitching a tent on beaches, in coves, on public land or in the countryside is prohibited across the island. Municipal by-laws ban it in every municipality, and the Coastal Law adds further restrictions near the shore. The only legal tent camping is on a licensed campsite pitch.
Can I sleep in my campervan on the street or in the countryside?
No. Under Ley 5/2024 (the island vehicle-control law), camping and overnighting in vehicles outside the licensed campsites is a very serious offence with fines from €10,001 to €30,000. Municipalities separately fine sleeping in vehicles on public roads (€300–750). Ibiza does not apply the mainland "parking vs camping" distinction in practice.
Do I really need a campsite booking to bring a campervan to Ibiza in summer?
Yes. What are the fines for illegal camping or overnighting?
Island law (Ley 5/2024): €10,001–30,000 for camping/overnighting in vehicles on rustic land. Municipal ordinances: up to €750 (Sant Josep), €300–600 (Santa Eulària). A publicised case in March 2026 resulted in a €20,000 fine for a motorhome at Cala Codolar.
Are there motorhome areas or free overnight parking on Ibiza?
No. Unlike mainland Spain, Ibiza has no public motorhome areas. Campsites are the only legal overnight option for vehicles; Camping Cala Bassa has the island's best motorhome facilities, including a service point.
Can I camp on private land with the owner's permission?
In principle, with the landowner's express permission, private land is the only place outside campsites where staying could be lawful. In practice, unlicensed camping businesses are illegal and "secret camping fields" advertised online are usually unlicensed — staying there puts you at risk and the operator at a much bigger one.
